三棵树学习中心坐落于克赖斯特彻奇，又称基督城（Christchurch）的罗勒斯顿（Rolleston）。其周围环绕着野生花园和原生灌木丛。设计师通过使用可持续设计概念和技术，为儿童提供了一处通过自主探索的自然方式促进孩子们学习和成长的环境。 Surroundedby wild gardens and native bush, the Three Trees Learning Centre in Rolleston,Christchurch utilises sustainable design to provide children with anenvironment that fosters learning and growth through a natural discoveryapproach.

项目客户教学法的核心，是使得建筑本身充当孩子们的第三位老师，或者是，环境管理员。于是三棵树学习中心的主旨便充分反映了这种教学方法，在为儿童搭建的建筑环境与其户外活动之间实现了一种无缝过渡。 A core partof the client’s pedagogy is that the building acts as the child’s thirdteacher, or an environmental steward. The centre has been designed to reflectthis pedagogy, creating a seamless transition between the child’s-builtenvironment and the outdoors.

三棵树学习中心一种供130名儿童使用，总建筑面积为634平方米，建筑通体使用天然材料。并通过其独特的外观形态和互动游戏设备，以激发孩子们的创造性和批判性思维。 Licensedfor 130 children and with a total built area of 634 sqm, the centreincorporates natural materials, unique shapes and interactive play apparatus tointrigue, motivate and excite young minds.

因为它毗邻自然保护区，建筑屋顶能对建筑周围成熟树木的树冠进行立体维度调节，从而实现它们在建筑本体上进行某种形态转化——不同的几何形状被系数覆盖于雪松茂盛的枝叶之中，同时反射了从树木之上的斑驳阳光。这样一来，便是在室内的教室空间和室外的自然空间之间，营造出柔和而温暖的过渡空间。 Situatednext to a reserve, the canopy of mature trees that surround the building aretranslated architecturally through the sculptural modulation of the roofcanopy. The varied geometry, all clad in cedar, reflects the dappled light fromthe trees, creating a soft and warm transitional space between classrooms and theoutdoors.

这个专为儿童建造的教学中心，一共设有六个空间宽敞的教室，它们成对布置，分成两组，从而成为三处主要学习中心，另一方面也从侧面反映了其名称“三棵树”——隐喻三类教学法。 Thepurpose-built centre features six spacious classrooms arranged into pairs tocreate three main learning hubs, reflecting the Three Trees pedagogy.

The leafy landscape forms a vibrant backdrop against the interiorcolour palette of soft blues, white and natural materials – a relaxing colourscheme perfect for rest and quiet times. Classrooms feature custom-madefurniture so that each space is unique and carefully considered for thechildren who will be using it.

三棵树学习中心的结构设计，使其室内外的自然通风比新西兰建筑标准要高出3倍之多。自然气流通过堆叠效应得以增强。建筑后部的高层屋顶灯使日光可以充分进入房间内部，并允许空气反复流通。 Thebuilding has been designed so that the natural ventilation is 3x better than NZBuilding Code standards. This natural airflow is enhanced through stack effect,where high level rooflights at the rear of the building allow daylight to enterand provide air extract.

建筑的大部分立面都采用玻璃材质，这样一来可作为被动式太阳能增益。另一方面，自然通风和屋顶顶篷的遮荫则可防止夏季房间内部过热的问题。 Much of thefaçade is extensively glazed, providing passive solar gain. Overheating in thesummer is prevented by natural ventilation and shade from the roof canopy.

自然采光使教室内的光线达到法规要求的三倍之多——这就意味着白天室内完全不需要人工照明；所有的建筑材料采购是极其负责的方式，并具有生态标签认证以及低或零甲醛成分。 Natural daylightfills classrooms to a level that is three times over the minimum for code –artificial lighting isn’t needed during daylight hours. Materials areresponsibly sourced and feature eco-label certification or low or zeroVOC/formaldehyde.

为了帮助恢复当地的原生灌木丛，建筑师特意在建造初期，保留了部分游乐场，从而为孩子们创造了一个更为野生自然的环境，提供给他们尽情探索的机会，同时也是孩子们建造昆虫旅馆，并了解新西兰植物和野生动植物多样性的理想场所。 To helpreinstate the native bush, part of the playground has been left untouched,creating a wild, natural environment for children to explore- a perfect placefor children to make bug hotels and learn about the diversity of New Zealandplant and wildlife.

由于该地点有许多成熟树木，因此在建造工程中，人为构筑的位置被精心设计以绕开这些树木区，以保留除少数虚弱的自然“标本”之外的所有“标本”。而除了那些被重新用作树皮屑和踏脚石的原木，没有造成任何资源的过分消耗和浪费。场地上的任何雨水都将渗透入游乐场或是操场从而循环浇灌植物——没有任何雨水会流到场外。 Because thesite featured so many large mature trees, the building was carefully placed toretain all but a few poorer specimens. Those that were removed have beenrepurposed as bark chip and stepping logs, so nothing was wasted. Anystormwater on the site goes to soakage in the playground for watering theplanting – zero rainwater goes offsite.
