House in a House [HH] is a family home in Pannipitiya, a suburb of Colombo, Sri Lanka. Suburban Colombo is highly residential, dense with smaller land parcels, and has undergone rapid urbanisation in the past decade. The site for HH is a rectilinear block with longer sides of the rectangle facing East-West, 368 sqm [15 perches] in extent, with considerable drop towards the rear, at the end of a cul- de- sac in a highly residential lane. It is a three-bedroom family home with an array of formal and informal living spaces, an open kitchen, with a double height volume as the main space, with an area of 237 sqm across two levels.
房子里的房子[HH]是斯里兰卡科伦坡郊区潘尼皮提亚的一个家庭住宅。科伦坡郊区是一个高度住宅区，土地密集，面积较小，在过去十年中经历了快速的城市化。HH的场地是一个直线街区，长方形的长边面向东西，面积为368平方米（15个栖息点），在一条高度居住的小巷的尽头，朝向后方有相当大的落差。这是一个三居室的家庭住宅，有一系列正式和非正式的生活空间，一个开放式厨房，以两倍高的容积作为主要空间，两层面积为237平方米。
Design brief

The design process included the client and his family in some discussions over rough diagrams initially to gain a deeper understanding to inform the brief. The outcome is intimate an inclusive process to create something with psychological ownership for those who to live in the house. Growing up in a family of five siblings, in the southern coast of Sri Lanka, the client had fond memories of his childhood home: soft light filtering through barred windows, lazy afternoons spent on a breezy veranda in a large garden and how it all transforms at times of festivity and celebrations with the extended family around the dining table …. Apart from meeting the programmatic requirements in the design brief and creating a contemporary image that would fit the family, we strived to incorporate an essence of client’s childhood home, a traditional Sri Lankan house, in the experience of their new residence, in qualitative aspects to bring the comfort of the familiarity. The house is a rethinking reinterpreting and resolution of possible drawbacks with a logical and open mind drawing inspiration from the traditional architecture without being bound by materiality and physicality of it. This meant outcome better adapted to its context and comfortable and satisfying experience to the user.

“House in a House” is a “barn” like profile extrusion along a rectilinear site intersected with a more elegant prototypical “house” profile creating a tunnel through. In the tropical climate, it is best to avoid the direct sun to minimise heat gain, and north-south orientation is the preferred aspect. At the very outset, site orientation presented challenging, and the holistic approach to resolution has led to a unique outcome which relates to a wide range of interests. It touches the sedimented vernacular Sri Lankan architecture and social parameters, delivering nurtured quality space for the family to thrive. One critical decision made at the very outset was to keep the longer East-West facades with minimal fenestration. The tunnel that runs North-South was the main interface to the outside and contains the more social spaces of the house.

HH is a new vernacular in a seemingly contemporary envelope. The high ceilings, the volume bathed in a softer light and the whole house having the ambiguity of semi-outdoor space such as a veranda has achieved something which connects back to its traditional vernacular counterparts without being physically or materially bound by it. The quality of spaces, sustainability and response to the climate of the house depends on critical decisions and passive design stairgates utilised in the design process. External envelope is the main interface of the house that connects with the outside. Having a strategy to negotiate with the harsh environmental conditions outside have provided something to evolve from as a whole, rather than piecemeal solutions to individual issues.

House transforms in many ways. HH has a dining space in the heart of the house and is visually and physically connects with the whole house and is set for intimate, quiet times. The house is efficient in its shrunk down family time as much as space could extend and expand to transform. Food and family come together in every festivity in Sri Lanka, and during such times space transforms dramatically to accommodate a crowd and switch to festive mode.

Inside, space is poetic; Softness of indirect light has installed a calm equivalent to that present in traditional houses, the breeze cross through creating a feeling of an eternal veranda, changing shadows and light from the skylights records the time passing by throughout the day When nature slowly takes over, and house is covered by the fruit-bearing trees in the garden, the house becomes an elusive silhouette with the garden seamlessly flowing inside_ a more controlled and conditioned version of it.
